Description: 1866 ROYAL Arch Mason Certificate Oscar F Knox Washington Chapter No. 3, Portsmouth, NH Royal Arch Masonry (also known as "Capitular Masonry") is the first part of the York Rite system of the Masonic degrees. Royal Arch Masons meet as a Chapter, and the Royal Arch Chapter confers four degrees: Mark Master Mason, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and Royal Arch Mason. Oscar F Knox has been exalted to the sublime degree of Royal Arch Mason. Probably Oscar Fitzalaw Knox (Born 23 Sep 1833 in Lyman, York, Maine) Signed by the 'King' William R Martin. Probably Martin, William R., c1833-1918Born & died in Portsmouth NH. Occupation -> sparmaker (blockmaker). Signed by the scribe/secretary Oliver G Fernald Signed by John R Holbrook (H.P. - high priest). John Robert Holbrook, 1818-1883. Occupation -> Sailmaker (T. S. Gay & Co.) and ship owner. John R Holbrook resided at 314 Court Street and owned & operated a sailmaker's shop on Market Street. His residence is now a B&B. His 1830s gambrel-roofed sailmaking shop stood directly across from the Moffatt-Ladd House on Market Street until 1884. John R. Holbrook made sails, awnings, tents and canvas bags. After Holbook the building was used by a shoemaker and a carpenter. The downstairs shop on Ceres Street housed George Fernald’s boat shop, then a gas station. Today it is a vacant lot.
