The front pastedown has a label of the library of the Philomathaean Society, Pennsylvania College. [The Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania is a collegiate literary society, the oldest student group at the university, and a claimant to the title of the oldest continuously-existing literary society in the United States. Founded in 1813, its goal is "to promote the learning of its members and to increase the academic prestige of the University." Philomathean is derived from the Greek philomath, which means "a lover of learning." The motto of the Philomathean Society is Sic itur ad astra (Latin for "thus we proceed to the stars")]. The Select Committee was charged with the duty of investigating ?the irregularities and fraud alleged to have occurred in the city and State of New York, affecting the recent [November 1868] election for representatives to Congress and electors of President and Vice-President?. The main report was submitted to the House in February of 1869 and the Supplemental Report was submitted in March 1869. The Supplementary Report includes all of the testimonies and data collected by the Committee. ?That Grant should lose New York to Seymour by a majority of 10,000 votes was a source of shame and anger to Republicans. Seymour's victory in New York was made the subject of a federal investigation. On November 4, Horace Greeley spoke at the Union League Club. The ULC promptly petitioned the Congress to look into the vote of the state. This petition was presented to the House of Representatives on December 14 and was accepted by a vote of 134-35 (52 abstained). Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax, the Republican candidate for vice-president, appointed a committee of seven: five Republicans and two Democrats. The committee was most likely created because the Republicans could not lose New York without a protest. It reported to the House of Representatives on February 23, 1869. The committee decided to take no action and Seymour retained all of New York's 33 electoral votes. Seymour was willing to return to this subject as long as he lived.? DOMESTIC Domestic Media Mail shipping, including Delivery Confirmation and Insurance, is standard and free. This applies to any address in the US and Puerto Rico, as well as to APO addresses. Media Mail, available only for domestic shipping, usually takes 3 to 10 days to arrive, depending on the distance and the vagaries of the US Postal Service. However, Media Mail is shipped by boat to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and will therefore take much longer to arrive Shipments to APO and other off-shore addresses may also take longer to arrive. During the pre-Christmas season, Media Mail is subject to delays. When filling out the Ebay Detailed Seller Ratings, please keep in mind that the sometime slow arrival is due to the performance of the Postal Service and not to any tardiness on the part of the seller. For expedited domestic mailing, Priority Mail shipping can be arranged at an additional cost. For most books, we charge between three and nine dollars for this service, including delivery confirmation and insurance. For heavy sets or high-value books, the charge may be higher. INTERNATIONAL For international shipping, we urge bidders to request quotes of shipping costs before bidding. We will also specify international shipping options and prices after the conclusion of the auction. We will try to provide a range of options but buyers should be aware that all shipments are via air mail and shipping of heavy books can be expensive. COMBINED SHIPPING For international transactions, combined shipping of multiple lots can substantially reduce postage. This is especially the case for multiple volumes that will fit into a single Priority Mail flat rate box. For that option, the postage rate is fixed independently of the weight (up to 20lbs). inkfrog terapeak
