Description: History of Grants Under the Great Council for New England: A Lecture of a Course by Members of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Delivered Before the Lowell Institute, January 15, 1869. By Samuel Foster Haven and printed in Boston by John Wilson and Son. 1869, 36 pp, 7.25” x 6”, 8vo, softcover pamphlet. As-is, with front and rear covers detached. Inscribed by Haven on rear of front cover. Chopping and loss to top corners of early pages. Light markings and marginalia. Text block remains bound well. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce piece on the Council for New England, an English joint stock company whose grants and land sales helped establish colonies in Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, Maine, New Hampshire, and New Haven. Samuel Foster Haven (1806-1881), was an American anthropologist and archeologist who focused extensively on the history of early New England. He additionally served as the librarian of the American Antiquarian Society for over 40 years, from 1838 until his death. A great piece for restoration. COLPAP-1385
