Darley's dramatic depiction of Native American Indians raiding a western frontier ranch. Plains Indians on horseback brandishing spears , cattle ( and a goat ) fleeing. In the background smoke rises as a settler's ranch burns. 19th century engraving ( steel plate ) on paper, 7 1/2" x 10 7/8" including margins. Aging of the paper, staining, a little paper ripple. Two repaired tears at the outer margin ( see the photos ). Otherwise good. Carefully packed for shipment to the buyer. ----------- Historical / Biographical information : Felix Octavius Carr (" F. O. C. ") Darley ( 1822 -1888 ) was an American illustrator. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania , Darley was a self-taught and prolific artist who started out as a staff artist for a Philadelphia publishing company. He later moved to New York City, where he produced numerous drawings for American periodicals and illustrated books. He is known for the vigor of his style, versatility, attention to detail, and the general high merit of his works, making him one of the most noteworthy of American illustrators. Francis Holl ( 1815 - 1884 ) was a British engraver, a son of the highly esteemed engraver William Holl the elder (1771-1838), to whom he was apprenticed. Francis Holl was both skilled and successful ; he spent many years engraving pictures of Queen Victoria and other royal portraits. He exhibited 20 engravings at the Royal Academy between 1856 and 1883.
