Description: VOYAGES ET AVENTURES DU CAPITAINE HATTERAS Les Anglais Au Pole Nord avec Le Desert de Glace Written by Jules Verne with 150 illustrations and vignettes by Riou. Published by J. Hetzel and Cie., Paris. It is the large octavo (10 3/4” x 7 1/4”) size and bound in 3/4 leather with marbled paper covered boards. There is no copyright or printing date with the book, but it was certainly printed in the 1870s, perhaps as late as 1880. This French edition includes both volumes of the Captain Hatteras novel, The English at the North Pole and The Desert of Ice. It was first published in 1864 and revised in 1867. Captain Hatteras is Verne’s third novel and the first novel to carry the title Voyages Extraordinaires. These French volumes are fun to own even if you don’t read or speak French because the illustrations are complete and the woodcuts are still clear and crisp unlike the copies in the American and English versions. These 3/4 leather -bound editions are generally 1/2 to 1/3 the price of the same edition in Hetzel’s fancy cloth bindings. From Wikipedia: The Voyages extraordinaires; Extraordinary Voyages or 'Amazing Journeys (in English) is a collection or sequence of fifty-four novels by the French writer Jules Verne, originally published between 1863 and 1905. According to Verne's editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel, the goal of the Voyages was "to outline all the geographical, geological, physical, historical and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science and to recount, in an entertaining and picturesque format ... the history of the universe.” Verne's meticulous attention to detail and scientific trivia, coupled with his sense of wonder and exploration, form the backbone of the Voyages. Part of the reason for the broad appeal of his work was the sense that the reader could really learn knowledge of geology, biology, astronomy, paleontology, oceanography, history and the exotic locations and cultures of the world through the adventures of Verne's protagonists. This great wealth of information distinguished his works as "encyclopedic novels".
