Hallman of Conshohocken, PA on rear cover. Light toning throughout with instances of foxing and light chipping to edges. Light finger soiling in the margins. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. Barclay & Co. specialized in sensationalized accounts of real crimes or fictional accounts presented as real. By the 1880’s they were no longer publishing new titles, but stuck to reprinting older ones. Penny Dreadfuls were considered immoral and often under scrutiny for their outlandish engravings and subject matter. Provenance of Henry F. Hallman who was a teenage boy in the 1870’s when this was published. Hallman b. 1858 was one of the successful farmers of Plymouth township. The farm contained thirty-nine acres, rich in mineral products. Hallman was about twenty-one when he went into the iron ore business, digging ore from the farm a short distance below the surface, and hauling it to nearby furnaces at Conshohocken. He continued the business for about twenty years in connection with farming when, owing to the furnaces being abandoned the demand for ore no longer existed. FORN-MSB-0623-Shelf714-LH100
