First volume dedicated to Levi Lincoln and second to Harrison Gray Otis. Engraving of Governor John A. Andrews opposite the title page of first volume. Preface of first volume says "that one volume should be devoted exclusively to the three years' regiments, and one to the cities and towns." First volume has 12 chapters, covering the commonwealth and some troops from 1860 to the end of the Civil War. Second volume is divided into 15 chapters, one for each county in the commonwealth. Each town in the county is discussed within its chapter. Between the contents and page 1 is a foldout color map of Massachusetts.
