It was for the shipment of a barrel of 200 eggs from New Market, Virginia to Washington, DC. The receipt measures appx 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and is printed on light-weight paperstock 1871 Orange Alexandria & Manassas Railroad freight receipt - Virginia Southern Click image to enlarge Description The Orange and Alexandria Railroad (O&A) was a railroad that extended from Alexandria to Gordonsville, Virginia, with another section from Charlottesville to Lynchburg, Virginia; it operated between 1848-1867. The O&A played a crucial role in the American Civil War, and much was destroyed during this conflict, to be rebuilt after the war. The O&A merged with the Manassas Gap Railroad in 1867 to become the Orange, Alexandria & Manassas Railroad (OA&M). In 1873, the OA&M company was consolidated into the Virginia Midland Railway, which was controlled by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. It later became part of the Richmond & Danville Railroad and, in 1894, became an important piece of the Southern Railway. Surviving trackage is now owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway. The receipt measures appx 7 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches and is printed on light-weight paperstock. Despite being now some 150 years old, it is in good condition. All writing/markings are from its use. There are no rips or tears, but two corners are dog-eared. It has been folded and shows moderate soiling from its use. The center has a small hole from when the receipt was filed by the railroad on a vertical needle file. The back side has no writing but is moderately soiled.
