Description: 2 sided advertisement for the 'talented elocutionist' Professor George Lyon Jr., appearing at Broton's Hall, May 10th,( 1873. ) Measures 21 by 7 in. Among the other pieces of literature that George Lyon recited on his two evening sojourn to what appears to be a hall in Kansas, was a parody of Poe's The Raven on the first night, and a recitation of The Bells by Edgar Allan Poe on the second night. There is even a glowing review of that recitation by the Cambridge Massachusetts press. He also tackles some of the racism of the era with a recitation on The Chinese Question, which was a hot-button issue in the early 1870's . Lyon was an easterner who was educated at Exeter and Harvard, and between classes at Harvard went on the lecture circuit. He seems to have disappeared shortly afterwards with a new career.
