Description: A Winter in Russia. From the French of Theophile Gautier. By M. M. Ripley. New York: Henry Holt 1874. First edition in English. 1874 ownership inscription of John Davis Long (1838-1915), future Governor of Massachusetts and Secretary of the Navy, at the time engaged in politics at the state level representing Hingham, MA. His later bookplate is inside the front cover. The inscription records that the gift was a Christmas present from Luther Joshua Barker Lincoln (1851-1902), son of Luther B. Lincoln (died 1855), a prominent Hingham teacher. These were distant relatives of Abraham Lincoln, whose branch of the family left Hingham generations prior. Bottom and particularly top of spine chipped, some staining to covers, corner wear. Textblock has traces of marginal dampstain throughout, generally faint. Otherwise pages yellowed with occasional foxing, minor blemishes. Binding has incipient cracking, remains serviceable. Later pencil owner name (Russia scholar Marshall Winokur). Good.
