Description: In this listing we are offering an interesting & scarce J. & E. Stevens Toy Company "1880" cast iron toy double barrel cap pistol. The "1880" lettering is cast in to both sides of the toy. This toy was made circa 1880 or so & probably in to the late 1880's by the J. & E. Stevens Toy Co. in Cromwell, Connecticut. An example of this cap pistol is listed as # E7 & illustrated on page 60 in the 1973 edition of the Charles Best "Cast Iron Toy Pistols" book. The example we are offering has lots of the original transparent finish & a dark, rich, & appealing patina from age. This is a double barrel type toy cap pistol. INCOMPLETE AS THE CASTINGS OF THE TWO TRIGGERS & THE TWO HAMMERS WHICH WOULD HAVE POPPED THE CAPS ARE MISSING. We suspect that the two flat springs which would have been inside & which would have moved these pieces are also missing. The length is listed in the Charles Best book as 4 1/8 inches long & this matches with our measurement which is also 4 1/8 inches long. The weight is 3.5 ounces.
