Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Cabinet card of the American opera singer and actress Marion Manola. One of the most renowned leading ladies of the American musical stage during the late 1880s and1890s, Marion had filed a lawsuit against the use of photographs of her in tights (taken during her performance of "Castles in the Air") for advertising. At the time she felt the costume immodest (her legs in tights as in the cabinet card above) and wanted to control the use of photographs taken of her. She was successful in securing an injunction against the display of photographs in this stage costume. Marion had to leave the stage in the 1890's due to morphine addiction. She was able to return at the turn of the century (free of her addiction to morphine) and was one of the first actresses from the legitimate Theater to appear in Vaudeville. This is a significant photo of an actress who fought for privacy rights and the ability of control how her image was to be portrayed to the public. There is minor soiling to the image. Judge condition of image from scan but please ask any and all questions before bidding as I want you to bid with confidence. This is a historical image from a bygone era documenting a significant actress of her day and the actions she took to control the use of her image and her identity.
