Description: Beautiful piece of American History ….little schoolhouse on the prairie! Circa 1875-1895 I acquired this desk at auction, it was in very sad condition & needed some loving restoration The history on the desk was that it came from the tiny Wyoming town of Atlantic City, likely was in the one room schoolhouse. Atlantic City is a tiny town here in Wyoming which had many fur trappers & once had a gold rush in its history, it has spectacular scenery & views in the middle of nowhere Wyoming! The desk is made from hardwood & is beautiful grained American Elm( I had a sample microscopically analyzed & it was proven to be American Elm) with some parts like backsplash & middle of slant top lid being softwood( likely pine) I made antique keys fit all locks, the slant top lid uses the brass key & the 2 drawers use the same iron key The old solid brass lid support I installed since the original lid support was missing, I left the remnants of the original lid support in place just to add character Porcelain casters are period casters I love the ink stains inside the slant top storage area, there is also a signature in pencil”DeVries” perhaps done by a naughty student writing inside their teachers desk I like the pencil trays inside the slant lid compartment, there is one at the front & one all the way back Pencil holder groove at top of slant lid Drawers are dovetailed at all 4 corners One drawer pull has a corner ear missing The fluted legs are beautiful, they have threaded wood dowels that make them removable by hand, they can be threaded into place & removed by hand, obviously making it easier to transport, likely in a covered wagon!! If you like Early American country primitive furniture perhaps this teachers desk is calling your name!! One room schoolhouses are iconic American buildings & fun history that shaped all of America, no doubt this desk was part of that history!!
