1887 Antique Aquatint Print; From Scent to View. Fox Hunting: E.A.S. Douglas

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "From Scent to View." DATE PRINTED: Painted in 1887 and engraved in 1889. Dated on the print.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 66 x 31 cm (26 x 12.5 inches) plus margins with a blank back (large). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by C.R. Stock from a painting by E.A.S. Douglas. Edward Algernon Stuart Douglas (1848- 1918) was a British painter in both oil and watercolour of sporting images. Douglas is said to have worked in conjunction with Ackermanns for many years, who in 1887 published a set of four coursing scenes by Douglas which were engraved by C.R. Stock. Douglas' paintings, both in watercolour and oil, show 'a detailed and delicate finish' (W. Secord, Dog Painting, Woodbridge, 1992, p.344). He lived in Barnes, south-west London, and exhibited ten pictures at the Royal Academy between 1880 and 1892, all of which were hunting scenes.PROVENANCE: Published by Arthur Ackermann, Regent Street London.TYPE: Antique aquatint engraving printed on paper. Aquatint is an intaglio printmaking technique, a variant of etching that produces areas of tone rather than lines. For this reason it has mostly been used in conjunction with etching, to give both lines and shaded tone. It has also been used historically to print in colour, both by printing with multiple plates in different colours, and by making monochrome prints that were then hand-coloured with watercolour. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
