Description: THE WOMEN OF MORMONISM Or The Story of Polygamy as Told by the Victims Themselves. Edited by Jennie Anderson Froiseth. Published by C. G. G. Paine, Detroit. Copyright 1882; this is a later printing with 1887 on the title page. It is also in a rare publisher’s full morocco leather binding with all gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Foiseth was editor of the Anti-Polygamy Standard of Salt Lake City in which these testimonials first appeared. They are anonymous to protect family and friends but sworn affidavits were kept in the Standard office in case the validity of the statements were questioned. From Wikipedia: Jennie Anderson Froiseth (December 6, 1849 – February 7, 1930) was the founder of the Blue Tea, a literary club for women who were not Mormon in Utah Territory. The Blue Tea would later change its name to the Ladies Literary Club. She was an anti-polygamy crusader who helped form and was the vice president of the Anti-Polygamy Society of Utah. Froiseth published the Anti-Polygamy Standard which lasted three years and later edited The Women of Mormonism, a book which described in detail the experiences of some Mormon women inside polygamous marriages. She believed strongly in women's rights and played a role in bringing enfranchisement to Utah Territory, later she became the vice president of the Utah Women's Suffrage Association. Although a strong supporter of female suffrage, she believed Mormon women should not have the right to vote until polygamy was eradicated. DESCRIPTION: full leather hardcover CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good restored condition. This book has been rebound and recased into its original cover with new leather spine and the old spine laid back on. The corners of the book are intact, but bumped and have some scuffing. The old leather has been cleaned treated for acidity. The original marbled endpapers have been retained with the old cloth hinges retained. Some of the page edges at the front of the book have had some restoration or reinforcement at the edges. The marbled endpaper at the back of the book is a little chipped along the edge, but has also been reinforced. There is an old stain in the gutter of the contents pages. All work was done conservatively with no use of acidic papers or tape. I have provided many pictures of the paper and pages so you can see what this looks like.
