Description: DESCRIPTION 1888 Great Britain Double Florin Barmaids Ruin KM# 763 3H0Q Up for sale is a silver coin issued for circulation throughout Great Britain. This coin has a denomination of two florins. When this coin was produced, Great Britain used a currency system based on pounds, shillings, and pennies whereby 1 pound was divided into 20 shillings and each shilling was divided into 12 pennies; or 240 pennies to the pound. An attempt to decimalize the currency was introduced in 1849 with the florin, a currency unit worth 1/10 of a pound. The next logical step was to create a coin worth 1/5 of a pound or a double florin. Because this coin was nearly the same size as the larger silver coin known as a crown (worth 5 shillings or 1/4 of a pound) this coin was frequently mistaken for the larger coin in the poorly lit public houses of saloons of Victorian England. Many of these were women who tended the bars and were forced to pay the difference out of their own pocket when the till count came up short due to their mistaking the double florin for a crown; and it earned this coin the moniker, 'the barmaids' ruin.'
