July 24th, 1889 Dear Friend Andrews, As usual, I have been a little tardy, this time because throughout the week I have been so busy on the farm, harvesting and working until as late as 9 at night, and the fearful hot weather has not added much to our comfort at nights. Very glad to hear from you and of your safe arrival home, after such a delightful and profitable visit to the old "haunts of your childhood." I congratulate on the proportions of your collection; you are certainly doing well both in number and worth. Since you have heard from me I have not been idle. Of the Signers I have added the names of Harrison & Stone, the latter a rare scarce name, and the former not to be picked up every day. Then, I have got a lovely specimen of that good old patriot Israel Putnam of your native state, a name I never long wanted. I never believed Gen. Putnam got justice, for I believe he was the true leader of the American forces at "Bunker Hill" and now for the life of Putnam by Col. Prescott or by Rev. Increase Niles, I have both — they are valuable books. Another new specimen I now get is a fair ABS of James Otis the Orator & Patriot of the Revolution. Another Connecticut name is that of Old Colonial Governor Fitch, there are some of the new... I can assure you dear friend I appreciate your kindness in extending me such a kind invitation to pay you a visit. I can conceive nothing that would afford me more pleasure than spending a time with you, and I trust I may be able to do so soon, and will give you due notice. I have long thought of trying that journey, some business now and trust the time is not far distant. It is rather hard for me to get away from home, but I have a visit laid out to see my brother-in-law at Chad’s Ford and will at that time try and arrange a stop off at Vineland. Mrs. Howard sends thanks for adding her name to mine in your invitation. She would love to be with me on that occasion, but we are so fixed now on the farm that both cannot leave at once. Have you got a Captain Wilkes ALS yet? If not I can give you a fine specimen. Trusting I may hear from you soon and that you are well this hot weather. Sincerely, James Howard
