His work is viewed as pivotal to the development of Proto-Zionism. His wife, Judy, Lady Montefiore, published the first Jewish cook book in the English language and was also a linguist, musician and travel writer.In his will, Sir Moses Montefiore named Louis Loewe, the author of this work, as one of his executors, and directed that he should be entrusted with all his diaries and other private papers to enable him to undertake the task of writing a biography of Lady Montefiore. This expanded to become a biography of Sir Moses also.This is an ex-library copy, once belonging to the Congregation Rodeph Sholom religious school in New York City. CONDITION In the publisher's original cloth bindings. Bumping to spine heads and tails, with marks to back strip. Front hinges to both volumes starting but firm. Library markings to front free endpapers, with the front free endpaper of volume II detached but present. Library stamp to a further front endpaper of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
