A former reference copy from a college library. Due to the age and weight of this book, it is in nice antique condition with wear to the corner tips and spine ends. Heavy wear and splitting to the bindings. The back cover is nearly detached on Volume I and may split completely before it reaches its new home - see photo #13. A few pages have short tears in the margins. Overall Acceptable condition with regards to the binding. Most pages are tight and clean. Plates in the front of both books are loose ( Jefferson Davis in Vol. I is loose - the Lincoln plate is missing) (both plates - General Grant and General Lee in Vol. II are loose and laid in place). Volume I has some pulling and cracking to the binding and there is a couple of small page sections that are just hanging on to their place by one or two stitches. Several pages have short tears in the margins. Pages 468-474 have chips in the upper corners. Volume II has a cracked binding with a complete split at the front hinge - see photo #15. Page corner of page 35-36 is chipped. A few pages with short tears in the margin. Pages 250-268 have a small chip in the bottom margin.
