Description: antique large stoneware Jar / Ovoid Crock with three applique stoneware medallions set evenly about the center: each imprinted with 'Century Machine Co. - Cincinnati, Ohio' -- additionally this piece has a curious and beautiful silvery brown metallic glaze that I bet was made up especially for this company -- this appears to be a special order item for the company, possibly made originally as a pair, and maybe with a pair of stands -- likely made by a local Ohio Stoneware manufacturer in the late 1800s/early 1900s -- -- Century Machine Co. made commercial bakery equipment including ovens and even made one of the most important units in use during World War Two to provide bread for the troops [purchased by Baker-Perkins in 1929] -- -- measures 14 3/4 in. tall by 12 in. across the center -- it is 7 in. across the opening outer 'lip' to 'lip' and about 9 in. across the bottom / weighs about 19 pounds -- -- a fairly large section is missing from the bottom: it 'sets' just a little off kilter consequently -- otherwise rather moderate wear to the rest: a smallish glaze chip on the lip / some very very old checking to the applique stoneware medallions / perhaps some unevenness to the glaze tone with a few nicks and scratches -- -- we are always listing interesting items of History and Technology: this perfectly blends both disciplines -- -- ***** -- Free Local pick-up is an option.
