It's unknown how it really began...a happy accident then intentionally? Sometimes called "Flown Blue". At any rate there was a period in early1800s-early 1900s beginning in Staffordshire England potteries where the blue was "flowed" during firing. By the Victorian era and late 1800s porcelain was a desirable item and Flow Blue became a trendy thing. Collectors even value cracked dishes.
