Description: Two hard to find, complete, literary periodicals, one English, the other American, related to the early work of the English writer and naturalist W.H. Hudson are in good+/very good condition. They include: The Critic (NY) for 4 November 1893. Single 19 page issue of the notable weekly offers a lengthy review of the first American edition of Hudson's new collection of essays, Birds in a Village. At this date the editor makes note to mention that Hudson was not in the same class as a writer with the popular America naturalist John Burroughs (although he would, soon enough put anything written by Burroughs far behind him in both quality and content). The editor also notes Hudson striving to emphasize the importance of the preservation of bird life in England and the brutal fact that there were gun nuts who had nothing better to do than to go out and "shoot the wings off" anything that moved, still a practice in need of eradication, still an epidemic today (2023) of the senseless slaughter of bird life in America. Hard to find issue in original paper wrappers. WITH The Times Literary Supplement (London) for 4 March 1904 (112th issue of the weekly). This very early number of the weekly offers a review of the first English edition of what is probably Hudson's most famous work, the novel he called Green Mansions and the narrative surrounding the mysterious existence of one of the the loveliest creatures in all of English fiction: Rima, a primitive girl of an increasingly endangered tropical forest of South America. Although the review is unsigned here in print, it is revealed in the TLS Archive that the essay is by the British adventure/action fiction writer William Joseph Cosens Lancaster. Complete 7-page oversize issue has a bit of edge wear to the printed paper wrappers. Early issues like this one of the TLS in original paper wrappers are hard to come by. See photos.
