Description: This is a SUPER RARE edition of The Poetical Works of John Keats from short-lived publisher Merrill & Baker. Why rare? Because I can’t find another Merrill & Baker edition with a “Death Mask of Keats” photogravure in it. What I do know about the book I learned from Steinerag-dot-com; home of Frank Lloyd Wright’s documented personal collection of books. (They have an 1895 version of this book that is very similar; only a different photo and no leather cover or marbled pages.) See last photo for the info from their edition. I’m describing to the best of my ability; but please look at all photos and do your own research too. If any rare book collectors or antique dealers have any knowledge of this edition; please contact me! I’d love to know more. Here’s what I DO know… Title: The Poetical Works of John Keats. Edited by William T. Arnold. In Two Volumes, Vol. I. Published By: Merrill and Baker, New York. Date: Exact date unknown, but Merrill and Baker only published between 1893-1906. Printing Details:· Top edge gilt· 3 sides deckle-edge· Beige laid paper· Printing press process is visible on the backs of some pages (especially title pages), where you can see an indent reversal of the words· Photogravure (most likely an etching pulled from a copper plate) with a lightweight tissue overlay page with its title “Death Mask of Keats.”· Paper label on spine says Poems of John Keats, Volume 1 *Hardcover could have had something attached at one point (Wright’s copy refers to a marble paper cover existing). Because there is marking on the green cover and spine that looks consistent with it having something glued to it. But this is purely speculation. Pages: 180 pages, plus 48 page introduction (marked by roman numerals xlviii) Size: 4.75” x 7” Introduction Page: "John Keats was born in London, 1795, died in Rome, 1821. His juvenile verses, pp. 3-62 of this edition, were published in 1817; his second volume, the Endymion, pp. 63-177, in 1818; and his third, containing Lamia, Isabella, Hyperion, the Eve of St. Agnes, indeed, the greater part of his best work, pp. 11-106 (vol. ii.), in 1820." Condition: Good. Loose internally at spine (see last photo), but still intact. Paper label on spine is not whole/shows wear. Title pages have yellowed, copy pages only slightly discolored at edges, very minor soiling found throughout, some wear to page corners, cover has discoloration on edges consistent with having something glued to it previously.
