Description: Ernest Renan was best known as a writer for his work “Vie de Jesus”. He attributed the idea for this book to his sister Henrietta who died suddenly while traveling. Renan wrote this tribute to his sister in 1862 as a private tribute; it was published in full after his death with the addition of some letters of Henriette’s chosen by Renan’s wife. This copy is in very good condition: some minor scuffing to the front and bends to the corners. Pretty spine with gilt decorations and letterings as well as a dramatic marbled board in navy, yellow and spring green. There is some foxing inside primarily at the illustrations. Titles are on the tissue overlays.
