Additional Information Croatian-born engineer, inventor, and futurist Nicola Tesla remains one of the most iconic figures of the era for his work in developing alternating current (AC) electrical systems. Tesla immigrated to the United States in 1884, where he would eventually become a naturalized citizen and begin his career at the Edison Machine Works in New York City before eventually leaving to start working on his own projects. Tesla was able to find funding for his projects, and he developed one of the first wirelessly controlled boats. He quickly gained fame for his inventions and would exhibit these works before celebrities and wealthy patrons who were dazzled by his innovations. Tesla sought to design and invent projects that could be patented and marketed for sale. However, he would find stuff competition from his former employer Thomas Edison who sought to publicly discredit Tesla and curry favor his preferred electrical circuitry direct current. Tesla's innovations were among the first contributions that led to wireless communication. He started his Wardenclyffe Tower Project, an ambitious attempt to install wireless communication systems across the United States, though he ran out of funding before the project could be completed. This photograph captures Tesla at the height of his success in 1896 and bears a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time creating a link between the past and present. This is an authentic piece of American photographic history that captures Tesla in a distinct period of creativity.
