1897, 2 Vol, Commemorative Biographical Encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley.., EX

Description: BEAUTIFULLY REFURBISHED/RESTORED ANTIQUE 2-VOL COMPLETE SET DESCRIBING "PROMINENT AND REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS AND MANY OF THE EARLY SETTLERS" OF JUNIATA VALLEY, PA. Fully titled and subtitled, "Commemorative biographical encyclopedia of the Juniata Valley : comprising the counties of Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata and Perry, Pennsylvania, containing sketches of prominent and representative citizens and many of the early settlers". The book was published by J.M. Runk & Co. in 1897, with no authors identified and only this same company identified at the end of the Preface of Vol. 1. As found, the original boards with leather corners and spine (3/4 leather) were present but partially detached in both books, and the spines were damaged. The original endpapers were also present but tenuously bound. The text blocks were very reasonably bound and very clean, with gilt on three page edges. The books were professionally refurbished and restored with an entirely new leather spine with gilt-stamped lettering. The original boards display the original gilt titling and decoration on the front board and blind-stamped back boards. There were a few locations with markings - pencil markings of a previous on the blank endpaper of Volume 1, ink markings of that same owner on a blank endpaper at the end of Volume 2 (upside down as in the owner turned the book over to make the marking), and there was only one page seen in a reasonably careful flip through with marginal notes by a previous owner doing genealogical research. All of these are shown in listing photos. ALL GLOSSY PLATES ARE PORTRAITS OF INDIVIDUALS, ONE OR MORE PER PAGE, AND ALL ARE TISSUE PROTECTED AND ARE FREE OF FOXING MARKS. There are a whole lot of these glossy plates - I did not count them and there was no Index of them or other listings providing a number of plates. The books are continually paginated, up to page 682 in Vol 1, beginning on 683 in Vol 2, ending at the end of the Index of Vol 2, p. 1375.
