Description: THE ART OF MASSAGE, Its Physiological Effects and Therapeutic Applications From 1897, an oft-reprinted work by John Harvey Kellogg, the prolific and flamboyant health guru, founder of the Battle Creek Sanitorium. The text features complete, detailed instructions for full-body massage as well as chapters on massage history, human physiology, the therapeutic uses of the practice, etc. The Art of Massage was first published in a small edition of 2000 copies in 1895; this copy is from the corrected and expanded second edition of 1897. The book remains in reasonably good condition. The covers show some soiling and general wear, no major flaws. The binding is weakened, cracked in several places, but there are no loose pages or signs of hingeing. The front endpaper has wear about the edges. The text has corner creases to fifteen or so pages, otherwise very nice, no stains, writing, etc. About average for a book this age, and extremely rare in any condition. At present this is by far the earliest edition of the book for sale online. Hardcover, 6.25" X 9", 288 pages plus dozens of illustration plates; the photo of Kellogg does not appear in the text. Ships promptly and securely.
