Description: ORIGINAL 18th CENTURY FRENCH ETCHING THE BATTLE OF FONTENOY, April 11th 1745.One of the key battles of the War of Austrian Succession, it took place near Tournai, then part of the Austrian Netherlands. The French Army, commanded by Marchal Saxe and numbering some 50,000, prevailed over a similarly large Pragmatic Army led by the Duke of Cumberland. The casualty count was horrific, one of the most bloody battles of the 18th century. Incredible detai in this scene, which depicts the French high command on the left, I think with King Louis XV shown as the bare-headed mounted figure on the right of the group. Celestial figures above the battlefield, with trumpets, and a large shield with the French fleur-de lis motif. An excellent print for military history enthusiasts. Engraved by PIERRE SOUBEYRAN (Swiss, 1706-1775) after a design by CHARLES-NICOLAS COCHIN THE YOUNGER (French, 1715-1790). Published in 1755. Signed/inscribed at the bottom Size of the platemark area is 10.5 x 18.5 centimetres, with adequate margins beyond. CONDITION. Good. One small rust mark on the horizon, centre right. The platemark is intact and visible, with good margins beyond.
