"Jacob Dold was born in Tuttlingen, Wuerttenberg on June 25, 1826. He arrived in Buffalo in 1848 and by 1860 he had a small butchering establishment on Abbot Road. In 1862 he established a packing plant at the Elk Street Market. He moved to a location in East Buffalo on William Street by 1872. The Jacob Dold Packing Company of Buffalo was incorporated in 1888. "This company was an important part of the canned meat industry. In 1896 alone, they were granted five separate patents for canned meats. They had their own fleet of refrigerated railroad cars and box cars for provisions. "Mr. Dold was one of the richest men in Buffalo. He lived in a large house at 554 Linwood Avenue which was occupied by family members until the late 1930s. "After Jacob Dold died in Buffalo on October 25, 1909, the company was managed by his son, Jacob Dold, Jr. In 1920 the company employed 2,000 workers with an annual payroll of over $3,000,000. "Dold Packing was sold to Hy-grade in 1938 and liquidated in 1943. Other plants were located in Kansas City and Wichita, Kansas; the company packaged beef and pork.
