Peabody was very influential in the development of the Mechanical Engineering Department and in founding the Department of Naval Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT ). He authored several books on engineering , steam engines , etc. Co-author Edward Furber Miller (1866-1933) was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1886. He was a member of the instructing staff of MIT, and in 1892 he became a member of the Faculty and Professor of Steam Engineering. In 1911 he was appointed in charge of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He held these positions he held until his death in 1933. Miller he was largely instrumental in the development of the laboratories of the Mechanical Engineering Department.During World War I, besides carrying on his work at the Institute, he was appointed by the Shipping Board of the United States to take charge of the establishment and direction of schools located in different parts of the country preparing men to serve as engineer officers for the United States Merchant Marine. He was commissioned a Colonel in the Ordnance Reserves, and in 1921 he was appointed, by the Institute Corporation, as Dean of Army Officers at the Institute.In 1921, he was also awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science by the Rhode Island State College. -------- Condition.General binding wear.( see the photos )The hinges are tight.No markings.Old owner's names on the front endpaper.No other writing.The front pastedown endpaper has an area of loss on the color coating.A couple of the folding plates at the rear are worn at the outer edge of the page.The pages are otherwise in very good condition.
