Description: I have here for sale a 2-volume set entitled THE UGANDA PROTECTORATE An Attempt to give some Description of the Physical Geography, Botany, Zoology, Anthropology, Languages and History of the Territories under British Protection in East Central Africa, between the Congo Free State and the Rift Valley and between the First Degree of South Latitude and the Fifth Degree of North Latitude, by Sir Harry Johnston. Vols I and II. First edition set published by Hutchinson & Co, London in 1902. Across the two volumes there are 506 b/w illustrations from drawings and photographs by the author and others in the text; 48 full page colour plates by the author, and 9 colour maps by J G Bartholomew and the author.Sir Henry Hamilton Johnston (1858 – 1927) was a British explorer, botanist, artist, colonial administrator, and linguist who travelled widely across Africa to speak some of the languages spoken by people on that continent. He published 40 books on subjects related to the continent of Africa and was one of the key players in the 'Scramble for Africa' that occurred at the end of the 19th century. Bound in half red leather on dark green hardboards. 6 gilt bands and gilt title lettering to the spine. Both spines and corners are rubbed and torn on both volumes. All boards are firm though. Green endpapers. These are ex-library books from the Malta Garrison Officers' Library, so they have the library's name stamped in gilt to the base of the spines, purple library stamps to prelims, title, dedication, contents and first pages and to the reverse of the plates. Pages clean and firmly bound. Condition: good.
