Description: I have here for sale a book entitled EARLY DUTCH AND ENGLISH VOYAGES TO SPITSBERGEN IN THE 17TH CENTURY by W. Martin Conway, and published by The Hakluyt Society, London, 1904. With 6 illustrations 3 of which are plates and 3 are maps. Discussing the history of Spitsbergen, in the Svalbard archipelago, in northern Norway. With chapters on the Troubles at Spitzbergen in 1618, and Disputes between English Whalers 1626. Also with 37 pages of information about the Hakluyt Society. Including, Hessel Gerritsz, " Histoire du pays nomme Spitsberghe," 1613, and Jacob Segersz, translated into English for the first time, by J. A. J. de Villiers. Edited with Introductions and Notes, by Sir W. Martin Conway. Bound in blue hardboards with gilt ship illustration to front board, and gilt lettering to spine. Bumped and chipped to head and tail of spine, and heavily sunned to spine. Front hinge is splitting. Binding tight. This is an ex-library and thus has library stamps occasionally throughout, otherwise pages clean. This book is in good overall condition. 179 pages + 37 page Catalogue at the rear. 23 x 15 cm.
