Marie Michailowa, first coloratura at the Imperial Opera St PEtersburg, was the first international recording star: Her first recordings for Gaisberg and Berliner were pressed worldwide, though she never left Russia. Not only is Michailowa one of the great coloratura sopranos on record, but these "close miked" early G&Ts reproduce the voice and the solo instrument in stunning clarity. She began her training with Mme Groewing-Wilde in Kharkov and the St. Petersburg Conservatory, then a student of St. Yves-Bax in Paris and Rauzzoni in Milan. Debut in 1892 at the Marienskij Theater (Court Opera) of St. Petersburg as Queen Marguerite in the "Huguenots" of Meyerbeer. She sang there on 18.12.1892 in the world premiere of Tchaikovsky's opera "Jolanthe" a small role, on 29.10.1895 in the premiere of the trilogy "Oresteia" by Taneyev the role of Elektra. Throughout her career she remained in St. Petersburg, where she was celebrated by Tsarist Russia. She has performed in Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa and other Russian cities. Their great roles were the Ludmilla in Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla," the Antonida in "Life for the Tsar," the Lakmé, the Micaela in "Carmen," the Tamara in Rubinstein's "Demon," the Gilda in the "Rigoletto," the Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Nannetta in Verdi's Falstaff (which she created for Russia in 1894 in Russia), Amina in La Sonnambula, and Marguerite in the Huguenots. It became world-famous through its records, which appeared since 1900 and aroused general admiration. Nevertheless, she never managed to persuade the artist to leave Russia; only in 1903 she was a guest in Prague.
