One pen inscription from a previous owner on the front inside cover, dated 1925, and a second pen inscription from the author to a friend, dated 1906. Jesse Benedict Carter was an American classicist during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He worked as faculty at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome, continuing to work there after it merged with the American Academy of Rome in 1911. The inscription from Carter at the beginning of the volume is addressed to George Clifford Thomas Jr, an American golf course architect, botanist, and author. Any issues with hinges or binding due to age or wear could provide an excellent opportunity for restoration and rebinding, if desired. A great addition to the personal collection of anyone interested in Classics and wanting to learn more from one of the most prominent individuals in the field prior to World War I.
