TAFT" Political BUTTON, Only CHIEF JUSTICE & PRESIDENT Description This is a very nice, full color, William Howard Taft portrait, "Political Button". He ran in the 1908 and 1912 Presidential Elections. Taft was a politically active Republican "Judge" from Ohio when President William McKinley plucked him out of relative obscurity to become the first civilian "Governor" of the newly acquired Philippine Islands. In January of 1900 he sailed for the Islands and organized the new government. Taft returned to the US in December of 1903 to become "Secretary of War" under the new President, Theodore Roosevelt. By the end of Roosevelt's time in 1908, Taft had become Roosevelt's "hand picked" successor and he was elected President. more below... Weight: 3.18 Grams, 32 Millimeters, Metal. By the time the 1912 election rolled around Taft and Roosevelt had "fallen out" and Roosevelt tried, and failed, to take the Republican nomination away from him. Roosevelt never gave up in his life. He "bolted" the Republicans and formed the famous "Bull Moose Party" to run against Taft. Predictably, this split the Republican vote and Woodrow Wilson was elected President. Harding appointed Taft to be "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court", a position Taft had wanted since his youth. He remains the only person ever to have been both President and Chief Justice. He served on the court until shortly before his death in 1930. The Button: A decent example of a scarce button. It has passed through some hands and has some light defects, like a slightly bent pin.
