Description: Original Hand Signed FREDERICK W. MARTIN Arts & Crafts Era 1910s Vintage 11x14 hand tinted photograph of Flowers in a Southern California Desert Landscape in original wood and gesso gold and brown frame measuring 14-1/2" x 17-1/2" overall. A beautiful photo! The frame shows some flaking of gesso so this one is priced accordingly.I recently acquired a rare collection of 1910s vintage Arts & Crafts or Craftsman era hand colored and hand signed silver gelatin photographs of Southern California landscapes and architectural scenes by Pasadena, California artist and photographer Frederick W. Martin. The images all have their original stunning Arts & Crafts era picture frames built especially for each photograph of wood, gesso, plaster and paint and are framed under original 100+ year old glass. All of the images are of Southern California scenes, many wonderful desert landscapes, mountain and seascapes as well as early 1900s photographic views of San Juan Capistrano Mission and Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. All but one or two of the photographs are signed on the image in pencil "Fredk. W. Martin" and most are numbered and have handwritten titles in the artist's own hand on the reverse of the frames. At least one of the photographs has an original gallery label attached to the back of the frame which reads: "GENUINE OIL PROOF FROM THE STUDIO OF Fredk. W. Martin''. These original doubleweight silver gelatin photographs or "oil proofs” are meticulously hand-painted and water-colored likely by Fred Martin’s wife, a watercolor artist, who began hand-coloring his photographs in 1911. This hand-coloring makes these photographs unique pieces of art. The images are uniformly fine, handsome and pleasing images, presumably sold as souvenirs to early 20th century California travelers during the height of the Arts and Crafts Renaissance in Pasadena.Please check my other items for more from this great collection of antique images which would be right at home in a Craftsman style house or bungalow and would compliment any collection of Stickley or Roycroft furniture and Rookwood or Teco pottery!
