Some water staining to the foot of the cloth used in the binding between the two illuminated pages, just imposing onto the card mounts on either side, but the illuminated sheets unaffected. Borders of thick card mounts somewhat brown, but again the illuminated pages unaffected. Light overall scattered marking to moiré endpapers, and one of the rear endpapers with a pale stain, only visible when tilted to light. F. Carter.Illuminated manuscripts like this from the early 20th century owe a lot to the art form's late 19th century renaissance led by William Morris and Owen Jones - and their circles - in the Arts and Crafts period, which was also spearheaded to some degree by the Gothic Revivalists. Leeds City alderman J. F. Carter lived in a large house in Beeston. He had The Punch Bowl Hotel in Beeston, rebuilt for his son in around 1890. However, his son later tragically drowned on honeymoon at Lake Lucerne, Switzerland. The street at the back of The Punch Bowl and the three adjoining shops is named Carter Terrace after the ex-alderman. key words:
