Description: Today few would define South Dakota as the West but rather as the Midwest, but that takes nothing away from the stories told by Gustav Gottlieb Wenzlaff in his 1912 book “Sketches and Legends of the West” published by the Capital Supply Company of Pierre, South Dakota. This little known (or available) book tells the story of The Green Prairies, The Boy on the Farm, Where-the-Lights-Go-Out, Spirit Mound, Old Scattergold, The Home of Waziya, Legend of the Good Man, The Great Sentinel, Legend of the Old Oak, Fort Randall and The City of the Skies. There is a single black and white illustration opposite the half title page of a monument erected to mark the location of the first schoolhouse in the “territory now comprising the states of South Dakota, North Dakota, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana – 1860”. A book for the young reader that can be enjoyed no matter where they might live.
