Description: Hydraulic-Mining Debris in the Sierra Nevada (California) US Geological Survey Professional Paper 105 by Grove Karl Gilbert, Washington: Government Printing Office, 1917 First edition, quarto, 154 pp. including 33 figures and 34 plates (some folding). In later gray stiff boards with black cloth spine. A classic early study and analysis of the effects of hydraulic mining debris on burial of agricultural lands in the Great Valley, obstruction to navigation from shoaling of the Sacramento and Feather Rivers, and raising of the flood levels of valley streams causing increased and expensive protective measures to prevent periodic inundation. From the period 1849 to 1909, Gilbert estimated that 1,555 million cubic yards of mining spoils were derived from hydraulic mining alone, an astounding amount of material that caused hardship and environmental catastrophe to those landowners most affected. Analyses of debris movements and accumulation in the Golden Gate were also made. Condition: Ex-library. Complete and very good overall. Light wear to extremities. Binding tight and sound. Except for a couple of library ink stamps on the title page and minor markings on the front pastedown and endpaper, all pages and plates are clean. A nice sturdy copy.
