Description: This is a 1918 Varia Historia the Annual yearbook of the College for Women Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. It is in good condition. There are no binding issues, no missing or loose pages, and no writing in the book. The covers are brown cloth over boards with gold lettering, "Varia Historia 1918" and the seal of the university. The book has decorative end papers featuring a detailed scene printed in metallic gold. The book measures 11" X 8 1/2" and there are 319 pages including advertising. In the advertising section, there is an ad for the movie "The Birth of a Nation", which was playing at the Opera House. Now controversial, the film depicts previously enslaved African Americans as uncivilized and savage and the Ku Klux Klan as an honorable organization which restored order to the chaotic South. Western Reserve University later merged with Case Institute of Technology to form present day Case Western Reserve University. The yearbook begins with a full page portrait of Dr. Charles Thwing, University President, for whom Thwing Center on the CWRU campus is named. Next follows a number of photos of various campus locations and then a list of University trustees. Sophomore and Freshmen class rolls come next. Organizations and sororities are represented along with activities such as commencement and Tree Day. There is a separate section for athletics including basketball, tennis, hockey, and baseball. Individual photos of graduating seniors appear next along with individual photos of the Junior Class.
