Description: The brothers Edward and John Burke were "Irish distillers, brewers, bottlers and (in New York especially) importers," notably of the dry stout that shares its name with their grandfather Arthur Guinness. Their partnership, founded in Dublin in 1849 when the Burkes were in their early 20s, expanded to New York a quarter-century later. In 1922/23 Burke relocated to Long Island City. I don’t even know where to start on this bottle. The older versions were small and plain. I date this one to the early 1920s when they relocated to New York. It is an early crude machine made bottle and it’s a beautiful mess. The bottle stands just over 9” high with a 2 ½” base. Starting at the base we have an embossed Cat Logo with “E & J BURKE E.J.B”. On the bottom of one side, we have “33” next to a huge bubble. The glass rises in a swirling mass of inconsistency, lines, waves and bubbles going every direction up to the seam where the crown top connects. It is heavy quality glass and has no stain, so the window lights up all these features. It’s just a beautiful thing. There are no chips of cracks.
