Description: Here is a 1922 RPPC (real photo post card) of C. D. Markel's Variety Store in East Salem, Pa, which is in Juniata County. Features a photo of the store, with 5 people standing on the first porch, and old car and old truck parked back farther next to the store and a neat high wheeled bike on the second porch roof. There is an insert in the upper corner showing the store with the date 1892 under it. At the bottom of the card is printed in white C. D. MARKEL'S VARIETY STORE EAST SALEM, PA 1922. C. D. Markel was Charles David Markel, he was born in 1876, the son of Adam and Rebecca (Amspacker) Markel. He was married to Mary Jane Snyder. In the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census he is listed as a merchant or store owner. By 1940 his job listing in the census is Odd Jobs and his wife, Mary Jane is listed as storekeeper. Charles died in 1943 and according to his death certificate he is buried in Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading, Berks County, PA. His wife died in 1942 and is buried in Shoops Church Cemetery. His parents are buried in Otterbein Cemetery in East Salem. There is a stamp on the back of the postcard that reads Lester Sankey Burnham PA. Burnham is in Mifflin County, next to Juniata County. I don't know if he's the one who took the photo or not, in the 1940 census in Lewistown, Mifflin Co., he is manager in a greenhouse. I did find that he was killed in 1947 when he was struck by a car while directing traffic. He was a fire policeman serving at the scene of a fire when the accident occurred. He was 38 yrs. old. The postcard has issues, it has a missing bottom corner, rough edges, creases and some marks on it. The back of it is stained, and was never addressed, stamped or postmarked. Still a neat old postcard even with all it's issues. Postage will be 4.40 to the U. S. IF OUTSIDE THE U. S., PLEASE USE THE POSTAL CALCULATOR TO DETERMINE THE COST OF POSTAGE. If you like old photographs and ephemera, please check out my EBay store and the other old photos I have listed. Many different subjects, time periods and places! I mail all my old photos in padded envelopes with cardboard to keep them from being bent. Thank you!
