Description: 1924 NEW YORK LEVUSH MORDECHAI by R. Moshe Mordechai Epstein HEBREW G CONDITION, HARDCOVER STAMP OF RABBI MNACHEM RISIKOFF ON TITLE PAGE Mnachem (Mendel) HaKohen Risikoff (1866–1960), was an orthodox rabbi in Russia and the United States, and a prolific author of scholarly works, written in Hebrew.[1] Risikoff used a highly stylized and symbolic pen-name, יאמהדנונחהים, made up of the Hebrew letters of his first name, the Hebrew word for Lord, and the Tetragrammaton, one of Judaism's terms for God. It is not clear whether this pen name was used in conversation, or whether it was used only in his writings. Moshe Mordechai Epstein was rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Knesseth Yisrael in Slabodka, Lithuania and is recognized as having been one of the leading Talmudists of the twentieth century. He is also one of the founders of the city of Hadera Novellae on Tractate Bava Kamma by R. Moshe Mordecai b. Moses Hayyim Epstein. R. Epstein was born in 1866 in Bakshty, Lithuania. He was recognized as the "Bakshter illuy" and was one of the leading students at the yeshiva in Volozhin. In 1891 he helped establish the colony of Hadera in the Land of Israel and a few years later he was appointed the dean of the yeshiva in Slobodka. In 1924 he transferred the student body to the branch in Hebron. Following Arab riots in 1929, he re-established the yeshiva in Jerusalem. "His method of studying Jewish law was to seek an understanding of the structure of individual laws as a means of comprehending the system of Talmudic law in general. To this end he made a special study of Maimonides, whose method of halakhic commentary he sought to elucidate. In his teaching, likewise, he stressed the understanding of the underlying principles of individual laws more than expertise in wider areas. R. Epstein visited America in 1924 and 1926 to raise funds for the Central Relief Committee and his yeshivah in Hebron. He passed on in 1933. This volume of novellae on Tractate Bava Kamma of the Talmud is a stereotype of an earlier edition (Warsaw: Jacob Zevi Unterhendler, 5661 [1901]). A third edition is Jerusalem: Hasekhel, 5717 [1957]. For a responsum from Epstein's father, see pp. 167-78. Additional volumes of Epstein's novellae and responsa were published in Jerusalem under the same title: Bava Mezia (5689 [1929]); Zevahim and Menahot (1936); responsa (5706 [1946]); Gittin and Yevamot (5708 [1948]); Bava Batra (5617 [1957]); Shabbat, Ketubbot and Bava Kamma (5718.[1958]).
