The interior reveals contents that are clean and firmly bound, the heavy brown end papers hinges completely intact. FOREWORD (excerpt) "In this volume there is presented to the public a record of past generations as well as of the present. Hawaii's leaders for the hundred and five years since the islands emerged from an ocean isolation are pictured in these pages." "There are several histories of Hawaii, and many books about the Hawaiian islands, but until now none has been written from the standpoint of individual achievement as an essential factor in community progress. In previous books, in more or less ephemeral magazine and newspaper articles; or buried in the public archives; or scattered through private and public libraries, there is a vast, miscellaneous store of material concerning the lives, hopes, ambitions, ideals and deeds of men who contributed to Hawaii's remarkable advancement from a lonely island kingdom to a moderan American territory. But most of this valuable store, this rich and inspiring record of human achievement, has been untouched save by the casual inquirer." The book is divided into three sections, the first 50 pages are The Story of Hawaii and Its Builders followed by another 150 pages, the Builders of Hawaii and finally, 700 pages of the Men of Modern Hawaii. The Index is extensive and includes hundreds of gentlemen from the community, with both the index and content organized alphabetically. Included are photos far too numerous to count, of these men, the majority are full page presentations with a lessor number that include 2 or 4 photos. Further the content includes more than just a brief listing of education and basic accomplishments, but several paragraphs on most that give a true outline of the individual, his background, education, family and place in the community. Interestingly, the only woman featured in this entire book is Queen Liliuokalani. Extensive in it's coverage, a publication such as THE BUILDERS OF HAWAII had not before been accomplished nor has such a monumental edition again been attempted. It is truly a rare item.
