Description: DISRAELI A Picture of the Victorian Age Written by Andre Maurois—translated by Hamish Miles. Published by D. Appleton and Company, New York. Copyright 1928; this is a later printing although the title page has the 1928 date. From Wikipedia: Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, KG, PC, FRS (21 December 1804 – 19 April 1881) was a British politician of the Conservative Party who twice served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He played a central role in the creation of the modern Conservative Party, defining its policies and its broad outreach. Disraeli is remembered for his influential voice in world affairs, his political battles with the Liberal Party leader William Ewart Gladstone, and his one-nation conservatism or "Tory democracy". He made the Conservatives the party most identified with the glory and power of the British Empire. He is the only British prime minister to have been of Jewish birth. He was also a novelist, publishing works of fiction even as prime minister. DESCRIPTION: 379 pages 8 7/8 x 6 inches first edition hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition with a fair only dust jacket. The purple cloth hardcover is clean and shows only slight wear at the corners and spine ends. There is a gift inscription on the front endpaper. The interior is otherwise excellent with no other marks, underlining, tears or odor. The paper is slightly toned with age. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The dust jacket is well worn and heavily chipped as seen in the pictures. This dust jacket will come protected in a new Brodart mylar dust jacket protector. From the dust jacket description: Is there any tale of the Thousand and One Nights, any story of a cobbler made Sultan that could match the picturesqueness of Disraeli’s life? Did he not realize completely the dreams of that boy who lay stretched out under the trees in the Italian garden listening to his grandpapa’s mandolin? Maurois’ Disraeli is the record of a stormy career, a life of vivid contrasts, hopes fulfilled succeeded by crushing defeats, overwhelming acclaim and thwarted ambitions, friendships and animosities, triumphant leadership and coveted honors that came too late to give peace to a tempestuous, storm-ridden spirit.
