This novel is a study of alcoholism and poverty in the working class life in Paris. Emile Zola was an influential writer writer, who is known for leading the literary school of naturalism. His novels show the prosperity and poverty in France during the nineteenth century. Translated from French by Arthur Symons. Symons was a poet, editor, and critic. His other works include 'A Book of Parodies', 'Tristan and Iseult: A Play in Four Acts', 'Love's Cruelty', 'Figures of Several Centuries', 'The Cafe Royal and Other Essays', and more. CONDITION In the original publisher's quarter paper vellum binding with cloth to the boards, in the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Spine and joints are a little discoloured, as is usual with paper vellum. A few spots to the spine label. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper, and to the recto of the rear free endpaper. Dust wrapper is smart with minor edge wear. Spine is a little age-toned. A few minor marks to the wraps, including a larger mark to the tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
