A student of such notables as Charles Burchfield and Millard Sheets, Underwood was herself a teacher and renowned lecturer on wood-cut prints. She was a graduate of Pratt Institute and the Berkshire Summer School of Art. She studied at SUNY Buffalo and The Art Institute. Underwood’s work communicates both realism and conceptual impressionism and she is remembered as a superb colorist, luminist and draftsman.
