Description: ON OUR WAYThis sale is for an original 1934 FIRST EDITION / FIRST PRINTING of"ON OUR WAY" by PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. "The almost complete collapse of the American economic system that marked the beginning of my administration called for the tearing down of many unsound structures, the adoption of new methods, and a rebuilding from the bottom up." - Franklin D. Roosevelt YOU'LL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!The dust jacket explains the purpose of this book to readers before they even crack open the pages - "In On Our Way the President describes his basic ideas for the reconstruction program as it affects national planning for economic and social betterment." It was the President's intent to show the milestones that marked the achievement of this new public policy, and explain the fundamentals of the plan for national rehabilitation. He hoped to clarify that the proposals and legislation which formed the New Deal were not a collection of "haphazard schemes," but rather a developed, logical plan. The New Deal faced some push back, but, Roosevelt's administration saw no way around change on a grand scale - it was necessary to the recovery of the nation following the Great Depression. People are generally at least somewhat wary of change. In the case of Roosevelt's New Deal, there were many words tossed around to describe it. "Revolutionary" - and it was, but only in the sense that it embraced new ideals, drifting away from what had always been done before, that which was no longer working for this country. "Fascist" - it was not, because it did not come about from tyranny or militarism, but rather from and for the American people as a whole. "Communism" - it was not, as it was not designed around common ownership, class wars, or the suppression or elimination of classes or parties. The various revolutionary programs included in the New Deal, this "combination of remedies," the President defended were necessary to contend with the "revolutionary changes in the conditions of modern life."He asserts that the New Deal did not deviate from the original intentions set by the framers of our Constitution, but was inevitable as our Democracy matured. It was set in motion with the approval of the majority of the American population, but he reminds readers that, of course, this is not an everlasting edict - if they wish to revert back to the old systems, they may do so at the polls. This book was issued as required reading for every citizen, available for just $2.50. This particular volume was property of edition E.W.
