Description: 1936 Press Photo New York Yankees Bat Boy Tim Sullivan PHOTO DESCRIPTION: Tim Sullivan was batboy for the New York Yankees from 1936 to 1941. He was previously the mascot for the Columbia University athletic teams from 1933 to 1936 until Andy Coakley, Columbia baseball coach, learned one day that the mascot almost matched some of the athletes in age. He recommended to his friend Joe McCarthy that Tim be hired as Yankee batboy, and a few months later, Sullivan saw his first World Series from the Yanks' dugout. The Yankees won the series that year, and every other year that Sullivan was with the team save one (in 1940). A happy mixture of humble helper and players' pal, Sullivan had a quick wit and was popular with the players. One of the most-photographed members of the Yankee squad, and can be seen in many shots shaking the hands of players as they cross the plate after a trip around the bases, and his enviable position with the team (including his salary plus tips from the players).
