About Marriner Wood Merrill:Marriner Wood Merrill was not just an American pioneer; he was a force of nature, shaping both the wild landscapes of the American West and the spiritual lives of countless individuals. Born on September 25, 1832, in Sackville, New Brunswick, Merrill was the tenth of thirteen children in a family that worked the rugged land. Despite growing up with "no opportunities for even a common school education," Merrill's life would be anything but ordinary. In his youth, Merrill left home to try his hand at life as a cook on a Boston-based fishing schooner. But tragedy soon struck—his father met a fatal end in a tidal marsh in May 1851. Merrill returned to Sackville to support his family, but his destiny lay far beyond the horizon. In April 1852, Merrill joined the LDS Church, and by the following year, he had trekked across the continent in a wagon company led by fellow Sackville native William Atkinson. Settling in Salt Lake City, Merrill quickly married Sarah Ann Atkinson, the daughter of his wagon company leader. The newlyweds endured the harsh Utah winter, with Merrill making shingles and laboring on farms to make ends meet. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Merrill moved to Richmond, Utah, in 1860, becoming one of its first settlers and soon a pillar of the community. He served as a bishop for eighteen years, became Richmond’s postmaster, and even served two terms in the territorial legislature. Not content with just civic duties, Merrill also ventured into business, building a gristmill and helping to construct the Utah and Northern Railway. In 1879, Merrill’s leadership qualities earned him a spot in the Cache Stake presidency, eventually leading to his appointment as the first president of the Logan Temple in 1884. Just five years later, he ascended to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a position he held with unwavering commitment until his death. Merrill was a man of deep convictions, which included practicing plural marriage—he married eight wives and fathered 46 children. During the anti-polygamy raids, Merrill became a master of evasion, even hiding out in the Logan Temple for weeks at a time. Arrested in 1889 for unlawful cohabitation, he managed to avoid conviction and continued his spiritual work, allegedly even performing post-Manifesto plural marriages. In the final chapter of his life, Merrill faced scrutiny during the Smoot investigation but refused to testify before Congress, citing poor health. He passed away from Bright’s disease on February 6, 1906, in Richmond, Utah, leaving behind a legacy that was as expansive as his own remarkable life. By 1935, his descendants numbered nearly 800, and many of them still call the Cache Valley home, living proof of Marriner Wood Merrill's enduring influence. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
